I heard this on the radio and can't seriously believe anyone is supporting firemen drinking on the job.

I have several friends who are volunteer firefighters - no drinking period.

They are volunteers. They are on call out of the goodness of their heart. If they want to make a rule that says no beer in the firehouses then fine, but say goodbye to most of the volunteers!

Dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Someone gets hurt or killed and they then have to prove he wasn't drunk or prove that he was. If you can't live without a beer for a day, you don't need to be waiting to put out a fire, you need to be at a meeting.

My brother-in-law works as an ambulance technician.
One shift for rural areas is 14 days on with 7 days off.

For those 14 days, you are on call 24 hours a day.
Don't go out of town, you need to be at all times close to base, I thinks it's 10k maximum.
And don't drink while you are on call, it's tolerance zero.
