My reaction here is about the posters who are just salivating at the idea of carrying guns and being able to shoot somebody with what they feel is justification. Just can't get wild west enough for them.

Quotes, or it didn't happen.

Really?

Run them over with the tractor, the plough out back will take care of the rest. "Three guys in a blue truck? No, never saw anyone like that officer."

Seems pretty wild to me.

That's what started me off too. Of course it's a joke, but it's exactly the kind of braggadocio you get whenever this topic comes up.

I gotta say, a farmer that really kills somebody who was trying to steal his truck, I wonder how great he's going to feel afterward. Even police who shoot somebody trying to shoot them have difficult feelings to deal with, how much harder to deal with "I killed somebody over a truck."

But I guess the hardmen on this forum aren't bothered by pussy feelings like that.

You have to solve most of your problems on your own out there.

You are generally your own carpenter, electrician, mechanic, plumber, exterminator etc.

It costs too much to have someone travel 3 hours to fix it for you.

So this is a group of people used to solving it themselves.

Has nothing to do with the guns Andy has nightmares about, and was sarcastic humour.

As I say, don't whine then, when the outside intrudes and puts you in jail because you solved a problem.

Be the victim of crime, rather than take the chance at offending someone with a unsightly display of self preservation.

Make your choice then. As I say, just don't whine if you wind up making the wrong one.

Problem is that everyone seems so willing to escalate the "arms race." Someone on a tractor is robbed, tractor stolen. Farmers start carrying firearms where ever they go . If this were the case and I was a tractor thief with murderous intent, I'd save my own skin by shooting said farmer off his tractor at 300 m with a deer rifle. No risk of bodily harm there. No tractor is worth your life. Everyone arms themselves for day to day life, someone is gonna get hurt!

If you're a thief in the middle of nowhere, why would you leave a witness?

No one wants to escalate. But like the stories I posted, and others we've had over the years - what is the alternative? Criminals from the cities are realizing that the rural areas have lots of things and no cops. Police, if called, can take hours to arrive. What do you do in the meantime, retreat to the panic room?

I debated this for a while and came to the mind set of... Look it's MY property I have worked hard for it. Someone want's to be a thief they must understand that they are putting their life at risk to obtain things that do not belong to them. I will protect me and mine from those that wish to take them from me.

If three armed men come after you to steal your truck you're not shooting them because they want the truck, you're shooting them becuase they are literally prepared to kill you and they may kill you even if you let them have the truck.

Just so you know, my personal and recommended rules of engagement in areas where people carry guns are:

1. If someone approaches you with a holstered pistol or a slung rifle do not shoot them.

2. If someone approches you with a drawn pistol or an unslung rifle then draw your pistol or ready your rifle.

3. If they aim their weapon in your general direction as they approach you then kill them. Period.

Because it's not about the truck, it's about your life.

[B-o]

Sure, the farmer can do what Delwin suggests and just let the thief have the tractor. Insurance will buy an new one. Or, almost new, after depreciation.

But then, insurance won't cover the crop rotting in the field. And it will take months, if not years to get another tractor. It's not like it's a used car lot, most tractors don't get built before they get bought. You have to wait!

So there's a couple more crops you missed while you wait. So you have to buy a cheaper tractor to be able to cover off the slim profit from the previous rotten crop so you can buy seed and fertilizer. But you can't afford enough to plant all your fields, so you make do.

Then the slim margin you get from a lower yield that next year goes into farm repairs and taxes on the land you aren't working . . . basically by giving the thieves that tractor, you've lost all the advantage and equity that your father put into the farm, and you'll be lucky if your son can work it enough to buy the tractor you had before so you can work all your land once again. And all this is assuming that the thieves didn't just clean out your home and barn while you were out working the field.

Do you see where your dinner comes from now Delwin?

Quick side not about the same time DR was posting I was editing my mistake. WISE should be WISH.

Makes the sentence and sentiment more understandable when I spell the word correctly LOL
