poquas poquas:

If indeed you are a cop, I would force you to be on AL and undergoing assessment and here’s why. There’s a phrase that trained professionals look for.

First there’s “You wouldn’t understand”. That’s a typical response that someone under some form of stress is holding back on and really wants to talk about. Usually a little persuasion opens the door and a dialogue ensues.

"You wouldn't understand" is also a common response when the person using the term thinks you wouldn't understand. That's the problem with many psychologists/psychiatrists; they think there is a one-to-one mapping ratio between a person's behaviour and what is going on in their head.

$1:
Then we have “You can’t understand”. This was in essence what you said. “I’m not one of you”. A much more significant statement in my field. Especially found among those in marginally stressful positions with limited authority. It indicates a problem that they’ rather not talk about and at the same time is an effort to falsely elevate themselves to believe that they are special or “above the average person”. In military cases it’s usually a sign of PTSD after experiencing something particularly traumatic. While is can result in police or first responder duty, it’s really actually pretty rare. In the case of police, it’s a protection mechanism to avoid dealing with an underlying issue. “We as police have to do the things you don’t so we’re better or special.” Unfortunately that’s more difficult to deal with and it makes the affected individual person a risk factor to themselves, the people they work with, and the people they have to interact with.

Again, I'm not a psychologist/psuychiatrist but diagnoses based on your very limited information about EyeBrock aren't appropriate. I'm not a cop, but I know quite a few. And I can tell you that they really do believe that we (civilians) don't understand them. I think they're probably right for the most part. Regardless, it's not a trait exclusive to EyeBrock.

$1:
There is of course a third possibility. This forum being a totally anonymous medium, an individual that is a rent-a-cop and pretends to be a cop is going to respond much like you did. Defensive and immediately attempting to elevate oneself to the stature that eliminates the requirement to explain. “You can’t understand because you’re not one of us” in order to cover their insecurity and to continue the charade that they really are more important than they are.

See, now I don't see this as being theraputic at all. I think you're attacking EyeBrock under the guise of trying to "help" him with his issues. Honestly, I think you're the one who is bullshitting about what you do/did for a living.

Nothing partiucalrly personal here. Me and EyeBrock disagree a lot, but your post is one of the nastier personal attacks I've seen in a while, and just had to speak up.

You don't "help" people on an anonymous forum, and I'm not about to try.

I'm responding to the crap that was posted earlier with a little factual basis behind it.

And no, "you wouldn't understand" is ALWAYS a defensive mechanisim.

Ugh this thread is hopelessly hijacked.

$1:
Other than recommendations for preliminary follow-up and evaluations for research purposes, I had nothing to do with compensation.

LOL So really you didnt treat anyone then, you just sat in the office talked to a guy for 15 min, checked the boxes and asked for the next one. Im sure you recommended a lot of people; who after a single session with a real therapist were given a clear bill of health and an appology for wasting their time.

Also to say the system is infallible and no one could cheat it is just plain foolishness.

It might be a defense mechanism if it is something someone could easily understand, say putting IKEA furniture together. However if a person has a member of their family murdered there is no possible way you can 'understand' what they are going through.

Another soldiers words:

$1:
The point that he was making was that the Taleban are willing to sacrifice large numbers of their men on hopeless assaults on the British forces - yet a single bullet, or IED (Improvised Explosive Device) can claim a British soldier’s life and damage the minds and spirits of his fellow soldiers for days, weeks, lifetimes. That's not to say British soldiers aren't tough; they are. But they feel loss of comrades deeply - they've built the steely bonds of friendship in combat in a way that only soldiers can.

They also spoke to her about the difficulties over girlfriends: how relationships end because "we never see each other" or the temptations of a Saturday night out while the BF is on active service. The attitude is "it's just part of the job". No-one really at home understands what it's like fighting, and sometimes dying, out in the 50C heat of the desert - unless you've done it. Old soldiers of any era will connect with this sentiment.

I think poquas has elevated himself above others by fooling himself into thinking he DOES understand. I'm gonna tell you something I've heard from NUMEROUS combat veterans from various wars. The ONLY person than can possibly understand what they go through is another combat soldier. When a combat soldier says, you wouldn't understand, there's a damn good chance you won't. We can empathize, sympathize and have whatever other huggy or clinical feelings about it, but we will NEVER understand. You can't possibly understand what it's like to watch bodies get ripped apart by an IED. All you can do is label the "underlying issue" and put it in a box, and somehow, that means you understand. Saying someone has PTSD don't mean you understand, it just means you know what label to slap on a person.
TO claim you DO understand would indicate to me you understand how the fickle finger of fate works. Which would either make you God or a liar.

I don't like the ignore feature but since none of his story makes sense, I'm not going to give his comments any credability.

poquas poquas:
Oh, and while I’m answering this, the other comment about compensation is still wrong. I worked under contract for both the Canadian and US governments and probably evaluated slightly more than a thousand individuals. Some were very seriously affected and most weren’t. Other than recommendations for preliminary follow-up and evaluations for research purposes, I had nothing to do with compensation.

Despite your strong denial about being part of the compensation process, which, by virtue of your position you actually are, the assessments you do are vital for the health and well being of the people you debrief.

If you don't refer a person and it turns out he has a genuine problem, this person could have a very difficult time, convincing the Department that he has this problem, since, they'll have conflicting evidence and while ties are supposed to go to the client, we all know that life doesn't work that way.

It could also work the opposite way, you could refer a person who's exagerating his problem and he could use your assessment to bolster his claim.

So, you can see that although you don't have a direct link to the DVA, you're still a major part of the compensation process.

This isn't a criticism but a suggestion. Since you are dealing with Military personnel, doing first level evaluations and sending personnel off for follow up, if required, you might just want to read up on the Departments policies and where you and your assessments fit in the grand scheme of things, since they're going to have a major bearing on some poor saps life.
