Where are you getting this 4 acres from ?

Thursday’s oil spill contained about 5,000 cubic metres of bitumen emulsion over a 16,000 square-metre area.

16,000M sq is 3900 Acres, not 4.

You are off by a couple decimal places. 16,000 square meters is 3.95 acres.

This.

BeaverFever needs to take a trip to northern Alberta and stick a shovel in the ground. There are many places in the boreal forest where you hit bitumen 6 inches under the surface. That is the reason this spill has pooled; the ground was already 100% saturated with oil.

That said, I'd still like this incident to be reviewed. As far as spills go, this is about the best case scenario we can have, and we need to prevent this from happening in farmland, waterways, and ecologically sensitive areas.

This. this is why it doesn't matter that the spill was on already oil soaked ground. Could just as easily been in a more sensitive area, could have been much worse if a Nexen contractor hadn't happened to walk by. Yes, you won't have pictures of damaged land or wildlife, but it raises the question about the reliability of new pipelines, will give the anti-pipeline folks ammunition when the next proposal comes along. The guarantees from industry won't mean very much. It also gives ammunition to people who just want pipes routed away from very sensitive areas, no matter if it adds to the cost of the project.
