Two L40 million Tornado GR4 aircraft have crashed off the north east Scotland after flying in thick fog. Two airmen have been airlifted to hospital as one aircraft was spotted in the water and the second is still missing.
Two RAF airmen have been rescued after two Tornado GR4 aircraft crashed in thick fog during an exercise close to an oilfield in the North Sea.
The L40 million jets from RAF Lossiemouth came down near the Beatrice oilfield in the Moray Firth, around 25 miles off Wick, shortly before 2pm.Two men were recovered from the sea and flown to hospital in Inverness, while the search continued for another two men missing following the incident. The Tornados, which carry a pilot and navigator, were understood to be on a low flying exercise in the Highlands at the time.It is unclear whether the jets suffered a technical malfunction, collided or went into the sea.

unfortunately, if something happens during these low level flights the likelihood of initiating a successful ejection sequence is pretty poor. If they have lost all contact then their is a distinct possibility that the jet(s) when right into terrain.
