High civic taxation hikes in both Calgary and Edmonton have been responsible far more for small business closures than the minimum wage hike could ever be. Can't speak for how Edmonton politicians do their thing but the Calgary city council is completely demented, a cluster of (mostly) far-left kooks who have become the literal definition of tax gougers and wildly irresponsible spenders. The minimum wage hike isn't even in the same conversation when it comes to the amount of damage that incessant business tax hikes have done in Alberta over the last few years.

the chamber of commerce disagrees with you. While yes the property tax burden has had much to do with pilling on the misery, that really was only in the last year or so. The min wage increase happened 4 years ago and has been drowning business since the NDP drove it up. The latest issue is really just the nail in the coffin to businesses that was just hanging on.

The local business tax increases have been going on for a long time too though, for at least three to four years depending on where the businesses were located in the city. The ones downtown in Calgary got nailed first, adding to their problems as the office towers increasingly emptied out of renters due to the oil price collapse. Then the city expanded the misery over the last two years to businesses in the outer districts and the industrial parks. There's several new industrial areas east of the city, still outside of Calgary's taxation jurisdiction, and the businesses there seem to be doing good - there's very few vacancies out there compared to the industrial parks inside the city limits where there's as much empty space to lease as there is downtown. If the wage hikes were that devastating then the new industrial areas would be in trouble too, but they're not, which shows to me that it's been the irresponsible taxation levied by Calgary politicians that have been as much of a torpedo under the waterline for businesses around here as the initial chicanery the Arabs did with the oil price was.

Tack on the four year's worth of disgusting anti-oil bullshit routine from the Trudeau regime as well. With all this crap it's almost amazing that it hasn't been a full repeat of a Great Depression-level disaster happening in this damned & doomed city.

well the COC does echo your statement as well. But if you expand this to a national level (just referring to wages) it will be disastrous. Some jurisdictions have much better handle on the property tax situation than say Calgary. I am not really disagreeing with you, just pointing out the devastation a 'living wage would mean...

True. If the federal political parties were sincere, which none of them are, about helping the working poor they'd simply change taxation policy so anyone making $30000 a year or less doesn't have any federal taxes taken off their pay. That alone would do more to help these people than any of these other goofy ideas. I guess they have to run the tax money through the laundering machine at the CRA first though before it gets re-distributed to the usual preferred "worthies" on their lists of corporate supporters and other assorted buddies.

Canada - business as usual, always, and pity the poor fools unfortunate enough not to have a seat on the gravy train.

Translation: the interests of working class people come second to the interests of federally regulated businesses (which are all major corporations: banks, railroad companies, airlines media corporations, etc...there are no small businesses here).

Once again a conservative shows their true loyalties.

But don’t worry, NDP is unelectable federally so it’ll never happen. And these federally regulated corporations have more than enough money, especially given that they don’t employ many minimum wage workers to begin with. You can stop lying awake at night worrying about mega corporations not maximizing their profits.
