The navy is putting in place plans to ensure the loss of the destroyers won't negatively impact the maritime force's capabilities, and Warden said Canada's 12 Halifax-class frigates can take on many of the tasks currently assigned to the destroyers.

Except the tasks that make these three dinosaurs important.

The lack of funding for the Navy since Harper got into office six years ago has been a frequent gripe of mine here at CKA.

Frankly, it was a joke that he issued the "Canada First" defence plan and then didn't bother to fund many of the items included in it.

As I've have said, the CF has been screwed over by the government of Canada (and by extension, Canadians) since the 1960s. No matter which party is in office, the promises always come way faster than the money does - and that's largely because most Canadians don't see a real need for a large well-equipped CF.

Sure it's myopic and short-sighted, but most people here want better health care or cheaper daycare instead of new ships for the navy or new fighters for the air force.

IIRC they must be in American waters and flying it as a courtesy, although I didn't know CFA Vessels followed those rules.

Maybe a sig could explain the protocol for the rest of us.

US Navy ships run up a Maple Leaf when passing through Canadian waters.

It isn't just a mere courtesy, by the way, it's a means of indicating that you have no hostile intent as you enter someone else's territory. We're all friends so we take this as a cute little anachronism but it's still very important to observe this protocol elsewhere in the world.

Hope that works out for them. Myself, I think it's wise for Canada to have a decent enough military to defend itself from all comers, including the USA. Churchill said it best that nations have temporary friends and permanent interests and should prioritize their affairs in exactly that order.

Sadly, I figure sometime in the immediate future we're going to see a blue water Chinese fleet dragging its coat tails along our western coasts and when that happens both the USA and Canada will suddenly and soberly reconsider our navies.

This article got me to thinking and I realised that every ship I ever sailed on is either an artifical reef, a target for badly aimed missle tests or razor blades used by hairless metrosexuals to keep themselves looking like an egyptian queens quiff.

SQUIMALT, BC – The Seattle Maritime Festival, hosting the world’s largest
tugboat races, will be held in Downtown Seattle on the Waterfront from May 6
to 8, 2010. Both Glen-class naval tugboats based in Esquimalt; CFAV Glendyne
and CFAV Glendale will attend and compete in the Class B (middle class)
race.



There are over 40 tugboats and workboats expected to participate in the
three heat tug race on May 8 during the Family Fun Day as well as a workboat
parade, boat building competition, and survival suit races.



This year’s Festival celebrates “The Year of the Seafarer,” as declared by
the Council of the International Maritime Organization. The theme pays
tribute to the world's 1.5 million seafarers for their unique contribution
to society and helps recognize the risks seafarers shoulder in the execution
of their duties in an often hostile environment.



There are five Glen-class naval tugboats divided between the two fleets of
Maritime Command, with two assigned to Maritime Forces Pacific.
