Bono challenges Martin to help Africa
Date: Friday, November 14 2003
Topic: Indepth Places & People

Irish rock star Bono brought his own campaign to the Liberal convention on Friday night, threatening to become a "pain in the ass" to Paul Martin though his drive to help Third World countries.

Bono said he agreed to speak because of Martin's track record on foreign aid. He lauded Martin and Prime Minister Jean Chretien for keeping a promise to excuse Third World debt in 2000.

  • "A certain kind of idealism still seems to be alive in this country."
  • "If (Paul Martin) shows the world the same commitment I saw during the drop the debt campaign…If he carries the mantle of Trudeau, Pearson and Chrétien… then Canada, Oh Canada, will show the world the way forward."
  • "The Canadian voice is hard wired in my heart. I'm a fan because a certain kind of idealism still seems to be alive in this country. You're not an insular place, you've always looked outside yourself, beyond the line of the horizon," Bono said.
